US Library Data Sources and Analysis
The purpose of this page is to provide links to a variety of sources of data on US libraries. It began as a means to locate difficult-to-find information on the Web site of the US National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) but has expanded beyond that as work on NCES--and other--library data has progressed. The section with these links to NCES's site is Section 1 immediately below. Section 2 includes "Useful Links" to other sources information or data on libraries, including some with analysis of libraries as seen through the data we have on them. Following this group of links is growing Section 3, "Analysis", devoted primarily to analysis of public libraries using the NCES data. Section 4, "Data", has datasets made up of longitudinal data that came from manipulating the various separately published annual compilations from NCES. Section 5 has "Plots and Maps" and at this time are experimental. They were done as tests and the programs that were written to produce them will eventually be used in the analysis of library data.

    Data Elements
    Year Definition(s) Passed:

FY2007: The definition that was voted on and agreed upon did not move forward because the survey is frozen in the transition.

This would be the 3-Year Implementation of Data Element (current year - 2007)

The cycle is based on “program year” (beginning at the Annual Conference (December 2006) and concluding the month prior to the next Annual Conference (December 2007).

    Year 1
At the annual conference (December 2006) data elements for proposed additions, changes or deletions identified. Must be endorsed by 40% of the Data Coordinators attending the conference. Ballot sent out in spring (2007). Results posted on NCLIS/LSP website.

Year 2 (FY 2007 data collection)
At the annual conference (December 2007), training on new and revised data elements (that passed in Year 2007) will be provided. A new or revised data element will be reported on a trial basis by any State Data Coordinator able to do so. Trial data will be electronically released but not published.

Year 3 (FY 2008 data collection)
The added or changed data element will be reported in the annual data submission and will be electronically released and published.
