ALS Variables, FY 2004 and FY 2002
Work in progress
In order to map the variables to each other over time, I am going to start with 2004 and first compare them to 2002, then go backwards in time. With luck, by the time I get to 1996, the documentation for that year and the accompanying data will be available. There are about 200 variables in 2004. I have not yet decided how to handle the earlier years, especially with the older variable names, some of which will measure variables with newer names. The varying categories within the variables also promises to be an interesting problem.
This file now has 196 variables for 2004 and the 500+ for the five years of the ALS. It is going a bit quicker now but I have not checked this Web page against the NCES originals yet. Mostly it is cut and paste so far. I have grouped the variables on separate Web pages to make them easier to deal with. I hope the index to the site helps
The years the data are available in the third column of these various pages are based on a spreadsheet I have constructed. These values will doubtless change as work progresses.

These variables largely are NCES variables describing the institution such as address, and so on. Also included are variables added in the process of compilaion to help organize the dataset.
