AWARDS PRESENTED AT
THE ANNUAL CHIEF OFFICERS OF STATE LIBRARY AGENCIES (COSLA) MEETING

Washington, DC - The 1997 John G. Lorenz Award was presented during the annual COSLA meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, October 5, 1998.

Jeanne Hurley Simon, NCLIS Chairperson, Robert Willard, NCLIS Executive Director, and Barratt Wilkins, Florida State Librarian and Chair, COSLA Research and Statistics Committee, presented the 1997 John G. Lorenz Award to twenty-four first-time winners. The Award is named after John G. Lorenz, NCLIS Library Statistics Program Coordinator, 1988-1997. The Lorenz Award was presented to the winners in the form of a certificate signed by Pascal D. Forgione, Commissioner, National Center for Education Statisitics, U.S. Department of Education and Jeanne Hurley Simon, NCLIS Chairperson.

The Award will be made each year to qualifying Chief Officers of State Library Agenices and State Library Agency respondents and staff for submitting timely and accurate submission of State Library Agency survey data. Following is a list of the 1997 John G. Lorenz award recipients:

The Federal-State Cooperative System (FSCS) is a cooperative program of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) that has been in operation since 1988.

"The purpose of the National Center for Education Statistics shall be to collect, analyze, and disseminate statistics and other data related to education in the United States and in other Nations." - Section 406(b) of the General Education Provisions Act, as amended (20 U.S.C. 1221e-1).

The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science is a permanent, independent agency of the Federal government charged by Public Law 91-345 to advise the President and Congress on national and international library and information policies and plans.
