NCLIS SEEKS FELLOW FOR STATISTICS AND SURVEYS

Washington, DC. The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) has established the NCLIS Fellow for Statistics and Surveys and invites nominations of qualified individuals. "By establishing this Fellowship, NCLIS acknowledges the value of our library statistics activities and signifies our intention to expand efforts in the areas of statistics, surveys, and policy analysis," explained Chairperson Jeanne Hurley Simon. NCLIS seeks an individual who welcomes the opportunity to assist in setting the direction of expanded NCLIS activity in this program area as the first NCLIS Fellow for Statistics and Surveys.

NCLIS is recruiting a senior program manager through this Fellowship in order to be flexible and responsive to the needs of prospective Fellows, their current employers and individual circumstances. The Commission has the authority under statute to appoint a Fellow directly or to work with the Fellow's current employer to arrange for a detail to NCLIS for a mutually agreeable period of service.

The Fellow will have responsibility for coordinating the ongoing cooperative Library Statistics Program between the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and NCLIS. In addition, the Fellow will take responsibility for directing other statistics, survey and policy analysis projects on behalf of the Commission.

NCLIS seeks an individual regarded by others in the field as an authority or practitioner of unusual competence or skills in the field of library statistics. NCLIS expects the Fellow to have extensive knowledge of issues and activities in that field and significant experience in planning, implementing and developing a statistics program in cooperation with federal agencies and library and information organizations. The Fellow must understand federal library statistics programs as well as the federal government's interrelationships with state/local governments and public/private institutions and organizations concerned with library services and resources, particularly as they relate to statistics gathering and use.

In carrying out these responsibilities, the Fellow will work under the direction of the NCLIS Executive Director. In addition, the Fellow will work closely with NCES officials and other high-level officials, leaders, and users in the library, information, and statistical communities.

Written nominations or expressions of interest should be sent by September 18, 1998, to Judy Russell, NCLIS Deputy Director jr_nclis@inet.ed.gov, 202-606-9203 (fax), 1110 Vermont Avenue, NW., Suite 820, Washington, DC 20005-3522.
