MARTHA GOULD NOMINATED TO SECOND TERM
Washington, D.C. -- President Clinton has announced his intention to nominate Rebecca T. Bingham of Louisville, Kentucky, to a seat on the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS). Her term would end 2001 and she would replace Carol DiPrete. Martha B. Gould, of Reno, Nevada, was originally named to the Commission in 1993. She would serve a new term ending 2002.
A national school library leader, Mrs. Bingham is the retired Director of School Library Media Services for Jefferson County Public Schools, Louisville.
Mrs. Bingham has been president of the American Association of School Librarians, the Southeastern Library Association and the Kentucky Library Association. She has also served as a member, board member and officer of many other local, state and national groups, such as Kentucky's advisory council for federal grant programs for libraries. She was a member of the advisory committee for the 1979 White House Conference on Library and Information Services.
NCLIS Vice Chair Martha B. Gould is the retired director of the Washoe County Library, with headquarters in Reno. Mrs. Gould also worked at the Nevada State Library and the Los Angeles Public Library. She was named Nevada Librarian of the "Years" in 1993, having been honored for continued service throughout her career. She was also named "A Woman of the Nineties" by Nevada Women Publications, ACLU Libertarian of the Year in 1988, 1989 AAUW's For Freedom's Sake Awardee, and is the recipient of the Nevada Women's Fund Hall of Fame award for Leadership 1989.
NCLIS Chairperson Jeanne Hurley Simon welcomed the news of both nominations and said, "We are very pleased to have librarians of the stature and experience of Rebecca Bingham and Martha Gould on the Commission. Mrs. Bingham brings valuable experience as a school librarian and a school library leader. The Commission will benefit from her insight and from the continued input of Vice Chair Gould."
The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science is an independent agency of the federal government composed of sixteen members. NCLIS is charged by law (P.L. 91-345) to advise the President and Congress on national and international library and information services policies and plans.
