Colleen Huebner’s background is in developmental psychology (PhD) and epidemiology (MPH). Earlier, she earned a BS in Psychology. She is Associate Professor of Health Services with the University of Washington’s School of Public Health and Community Medicine and directs the School’s Maternal and Child Health Leadership Training Program. Dr. Huebner holds adjunct appointments in Family and Child Nursing and Pediatric Dentistry.
She has published numerous scholarly journal articles, chapters in book, technical reports, book reviews, conference papers, and articles in professional newsletters, as well as made many invited presentations and conducted workshops. She has served as Principal Investigator or Co-investigator in twelve funded research studies, with grants from Kaiser Permanente, the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, Eli Lilly, Centers for Disease Control, John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and others.
Dr. Huebner’s research is applied developmental research to improve the lives of infants and preschool children through preventive interventions for normally-developing and at-risk children. Recent research studies have included evaluation of Head Start and Early Head Start programs, an adaptation and evaluation of Healthy Steps for Young Children, the design and evaluation of maltreatment prevention programs, creating and testing web-based resources for parents and caregivers with relatively low literacy and health literacy skills, and numerous studies of community-based support for young children’s language and emergent literacy development. Her research settings span pediatric health care, private mental health training programs, early childhood education sites, community programs and public libraries. Dr. Huebner writes for the research literature on parenting, parent-child interaction and multiple domains of child health and development including emotional health, oral health, language and emergent literacy. Dr. Huebner speaks regularly to community groups and pediatric and education professionals on these topics.
