Beth Duston Fitzsimmons

Beth Firzsimmons

Since 1975, Dr. Fitzsimmons has provided a full range of information services for high tech companies. Her firm, Information Strategists, founded in 1987, features development of technical information centers, corporate information audits, electronic online and Internet information resources, database creation and maintenance, customized market research, and patent searches. Information Strategists is networked with science and engineering information experts nationwide. Clients include scientists, engineers, marketing specialists and executives of major U.S. Corporations.

She earned her doctorate in Public Policy specializing in Information Policy. Her dissertation was entitled "Knowledge Spillovers from Joint Government-Industry Supported Research: A Case-Study from the Automotive Industry."

From 1996-1999, Dr. Fitzsimmons was involved with several projects at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office including assisting patent examiners with prior art research in the computer and software art unit and reviewing commercial database practices, trends and operational options. Another project was conducted for the National Academy of Public Administration to develop outcome measures at PTO for compliance with the Government Performance and Results Act.

From 1993-1996, she was associated with CENDI; an Executive Branch interagency working group composed of the scientific and technical (STI) information managers from the Departments of Commerce, Energy, Defense, Health and Human Services, and NASA. She has been involved in activities related to indexing, modernization, gateways, bibliographic record exchange, and machine translation, as well as other current information-related issues of importance to the scientific and technical community.

Dr. Fitzsimmons served as the information specialist for 10 years at Aerodyne Research, Inc., a contract research firm specializing in the physical sciences. The Aerodyne Information Center was selected by Infometrics, Inc., as one of the top 50 corporate libraries in the country.

Dr. Fitzsimmons also has served as the Chairman of the Depository Library Council to the U.S. Public Printer (1993-94) and received the Public Printer's Distinguished Service Award. She was a Presidential appointee to the Advisory Board of the 2nd White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services (1991) and based on her understanding of Information technology, chaired the conference's Technology Committee. She is also a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Special Libraries Association (SLA), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
