Allison Druin

Dr. Druin is a faculty member in the University of Maryland's College of Information Studies and is a member of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab. Her previous positions included Research Assistant in the Computer Science Department at the University of New Mexico; Director of Education Programs and co-founder of New York University Media Research Lab; Product Manager for Design Systems, Scitext America; Consultant for the NASA Classroom of the Future, Boston Computer Museum; and Research Assistant at the MIT Media Lab.

For the past five years, she has led interdisciplinary research teams of librarians, educational researchers, computer scientists, artists, classroom teachers and children to create new libraries for children. Dr. Druin is the research leader for the recently launched "International Children's Digital Library" (ICDL) http://www.icdlbooks.org. Supported by substantial funding from the National Science Foundation and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the mission of this five-year research project is to select, collect, digitize and organize children's books, and to create appropriate technologies for access and use by children ages 3-13. Currently, the library includes materials donated from 20 different countries (Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Croatia, Singapore, South Africa, the United States and more). Thanks to partnerships with national libraries, public library systems, professional associations, commercial publishers, authors, illustrators, and school districts around the world, the ICDL's Collection is expected to grow in the next five years to be 10,000 digital books in at least 100 languages. Dr. Druin is leading the research efforts to understand how children as users of new technologies change in their thinking about books, libraries, technologies and other cultures due to the development of new digital libraries.

Dr. Druin has received many awards and honors, including the National Science Foundation Career Award, Outstanding Faculty of the Award at the University of Maryland, Lilly Center for Teaching Excellence Teaching Fellow Award, and ACM SIGCHI Distinguished Service Award. She is a prolific author and frequent speaker at conferences and symposia.
